This film won a special Oscar for the special effects needed to show the aftermath of a glacier collapse. It's a scene that still makes an impression 80 years later and is the climax in the story about the rivalry that arises when Russian pirates raid the nets of local fishermen and the effect that has on fishermen Tyler [George Raft] and Jim [Henry Fonda]. Tyler joins the pirates, while Jim remains loyal to the traditional way of fishing and does not want to jeopardize his friendship with colleagues and their neighbors in a remote Alaskan village. Dorothy Lamour provides a romantic rivalry, John Barrymore plays (ironically) an alcoholic poet and animal lovers can enjoy Tyler's pet: a seal. Above average, partly because it was partly filmed on location and certainly worth seeing for fans of Raft and Fonda.

The first thing I noticed was that this film looked pretty big budget by the standards of the time, with many shots shot on location. Henry Fonda and George Raft play two friends in a fishing port in Alaska. But life is tough there and to make ends meet, Russian pirates led by Red Skain steal other people's catch. The fishermen have had enough and vow to kill the thieves if they are caught red-handed. The drama then comes when one of the friends joins the Russians to get his share.

The film needed some time to get going, but the second half is absolutely well done. It gets a bit fierce at times. Romance was never lacking in that era; the women are mainly used to appeal to the conscience and reason of the men... which usually doesn't work. Strong acting, but it is mainly Hathaway's ambitious direction that takes the film to a higher level for me.
