"One promise can shape a lifetime."
In the midst of the chaos of the Korean War refugee crisis in December 1950, a young boy, Duk-soo, sees his life change in an instant when he loses his sister and leaves his father behind to find her. In the small town of Busan, Duk-soo later dedicates himself to his remaining family, doing odd jobs for his father to support them. His devotion first leads him to the deadly coal mines in Germany, where he meets his first love, Youngja. He then travels on to war-torn Vietnam.
