Don't ask me why a grown man with all his marbles would like a film about a teacher who occasionally turns into a frog, but I really did enjoy it. It didn't quite give me a frog in my throat, but I recommend this film for young and old. While the harvest regarding Dutch films for an adult audience was very meager in 2016, in this little frog country we are really on the right side of the score when it comes to appealing children's films. Meester Kikker is fast-paced entertainment, an idiotic but original story with an enthusiastic group of actors. The two children in the lead roles are excellently cast, and Spitzenberger also delivers an almost impossible but strong performance. Jeroen is not a cold frog here, but a flesh-and-blood human being, and therefore adds absolute value to the success of this project.

Excellent children's film with a good pace, nicely acted by Yenthe Bos and with a fine performance by Jeroen Spitzenberger, although personally, the romantic entanglements involving Director Stork gave me butterflies in my stomach. Truly very entertaining.

Just like Dolfje Weerwolfje, Meester Kikker is pure nostalgia for me. I devoured Paul van Loon's books with great pleasure during my early primary school days. The impact was, even 10 years ago, too long ago to go to the cinema for this, but it is one of those films you remember. For me, it is typically the kind of case where streaming comes in handy.

It turns out to be a very sweet film and, as far as I can remember, a faithful adaptation. Much of this is due to the fine casting of Jeroen Spitzenberger and Yenthe Bos. The latter, in particular, is very entertaining, and the other kids are believable too. Georgina Verbaan, Wine Dierickx (good chemistry with Spitzenberger), and Paul Kooij also fit their roles well. The latter has a number of particularly convincing and hilarious interactions with his 'peer'. The short running time is perfect: the film makes optimal use of it and contains little to no filler. But best of all: this is truly quintessentially Dutch in the most positive sense of the word. A small rural village with its accompanying culture; the cycling, the cottages, the small school... It has something very characteristic and charming about it. In that respect, the film is a real bullseye.

It is of course nothing spectacular, as it is a fairly simple (albeit delightfully wacky) story, but as a family film I found this to be truly above average. Perhaps the most enjoyable Dutch children's film I have seen since the Paard van Sinterklaas films. It is presented smoothly, making it a delightful watch, and I certainly believe that younger viewers can get plenty of enjoyment out of it as well.

3.5*
