A movie about bears is always good. Well, except perhaps when it's turned into such a stereotypical and cliché movie bear story. There's a big difference between movie bears and real bears; real bears don't stand on their hind legs and roar when they're angry, for example (they stand to see further, not out of aggression). And that constant roaring and puffing is also a fairy tale, and so is that paw-waving. The American NPS has a meme about it: "Don't bother waving at bears, your opposable thumb means nothing to them."

On the other hand, the film's basic premise of a bear adopting a cub of another species is perhaps less far-fetched than you might think. There are plenty of known cases of bears adopting the cubs of other bears, for example. A human child might be a step too far, but completely unthinkable, no.

Richard Harris is actually quite good as Grandpa, who briefly scares the kids with his bedtime stories, and Bryan Brown is decent as filler for the human side of the story. The only actor who truly deserves credit, of course, is the bear; that's just the kind of movie it is. And according to the IMDB, at least five bears play the role of Mizzy—and the title role even lists six, which makes me think IMDB forgot about the cubs, and that must be Betty & Barney. That still leaves four bears for the lead roles—I noticed they weren't the same ones every time, but I didn't recognize that many.

Aside from the interest in bears, it's a bit of a so-so film. Partly because the available DVD quality isn't exactly great, but even if you look past that, the environment could have been explored a bit more. The average nature film from Alaska or Canada from the past few years is definitely much better. But then again, there's no mama bear in those.
