What a sweet video. I got into it easily and I think it's a lot of fun and well played. He knew how to entertain me. Beautiful, compelling story. 4.5*

I like the old corny Hollywood, but this comes from a time when it seemed enough to just put on a child star. In this film she is 'already' 11 years old with a large series of films behind her. A lot of time was spent on sets, costuming and props. The rest of the cast plays in Temple's shadow. In the past, the child star was the great asset of her films, while here the main focus seems to be on the book and the zeitgeist. But the click is not there and it is mainly a somewhat annoying Temple that gets the attention. If you put this next to other films from 1939 (Wizard of Oz, Gone with the wind, Stagecoach, ...) this is very meager.

Very sweet as a modern fairy tale, but temple's charm works well and the drama story is effective but perhaps a bit too lighthearted.
