This is the perfectly constructed whodunit, with an ingenious intrigue that falls just within the bounds of the believable. Contrary to the premise of this genre, this story never gets boring, even if you already know who did it.

It's a blessing that Agatha Christie has remarried an archaeologist, because that's why she spent a lot of time in the Middle East and Egypt, which resulted in beautiful sites. The historic sites and the mighty Nile provide a timeless backdrop. The first time Poirot comes into view, there is a matchcut from his face to that of the Sphinx. Both observe reality; both are equally inscrutable.

Because the murder takes place after an hour, the elegant Lois Chiles still has a major role as the intended victim. Then we see her a few more times in hypothetical flashbacks: images of what might have happened. The first hour serves to introduce the motley crew to suspects. They all have some motive for getting rid of the rich Linnet. They all have a well-considered place in the story, for example the dipsomaniac writer (Angela Lansbury) as comic relief or the communist (Jon Finch) as red herring[/ spoiler].

Peter Ustinov gives Poirot the necessary sense of detail and symmetry, but with enough joie de vivre not to become a character. That strap to keep his mustache in shape at night was a topic on episode of QI. The cast is to die for. Most of the actors play someone who is somewhat similar to one of their other roles: Mia Farrow as neurotic, David Niven as British gentleman, Bette Davis as scheming with seedy eyes, Olivia Hussey as nubile daughter... It's typecasting in a good sense. . The combination of suspense and humor, the location, the actors and the music of Nino Rota keep it captivating from start to finish.

Soon the new version of Kenneth Brannagh, given what he has done in recent years I am afraid that the version from the seventies will not be surpassed. The cast alone is reason enough to make your mouth water: Peter Ustinov, Jane Birkin, Bette Davis, Mia Farrow, Jon Finch, George Kennedy, Angela Lansbury, David Niven .... of course the whole film revolves around a murder and especially the big question Whodunit? Agatha Christie is often a bit on the top of society, a bit ladylike, but her plots are always darn well put together. Civilized, a bit of humor and eccentric characters, but in the meantime you are on the edge of your seat.
