Scaramouche plot

France, 18th century. André Moreau, bastard son of a nobleman, flutters through life and devotes himself to the art of seduction. His newest muse is Aline de Gavrillac, the beautiful very young betrothed of the Marquis de Maynes. This fencing king exposes André's best friend as the revolutionary Brutus and kills him in a duel. André has to go into hiding and joins a traveling theater company where he causes a furore as clown Scaramouche. Behind the scenes, however, he practices his swordsmanship.
