Night. A door swings open. A woman throws herself into a man's arms: she has her shoes in her hand. A cafe. A man looks at a woman; he gets up, so does she. Love at first sight. They throw themselves into each other's arms and lose themselves in a dance. A telephone rings, a man comes running, out of breath. Grinding music resounds through the feverish night. A girl pulls a girl against her. A woman slams open a door, storms up a flight of stairs. A man grabs a woman. Resists. Two men break up. A very emotional woman falls into a taxi. In a city, on a hot, tumultuous summer night, men, women, children, captivated by desire, capable of anything, let themselves be carried away by their delirious feeling, sometimes to the point of infatuation. As long as the night lasts. Toute une nuit: a film about the night, the night as people in Brussels experience it in many different ways.

The lady who introduced this film to Kino is quite right that the film emphasizes that emotions are magnified in the night. You feel even sadder, freer, more passionate, lonelier. This film is an observational film about those kinds of emotions in people on a sweltering summer night in Brussels. Many vignettes and each person appears only once (or sometimes two) in the film. Fragments of events without context. Just like in the night context sometimes seems to disappear. People discover to love someone or not anymore. People come together and leave each other. As was Akerman's own, she looks at the behaviors and rituals that go with it. My tenth full-length film by Akerman also shows me how incredibly special she was. She is still missed.
