The first shot: a view of a row of identical, simple workers' cottages with small gardens in front, the alleyway at the back, and you're in a gray, English town, and inevitably you think of Ken Loach...

A Ken Loach, in his early years, in a style and with subjects that have continued to characterize him to this day: social and family situations, ordinary, often disadvantaged citizens, their powerlessness, conflicts and frustrations, the injustice and arbitrariness of the government...

"Family Life" is a compelling film made at a time when a significant social evolution was taking place and mutual respect between authority figures (including parents) and young people was often very shaky.

A sober, realistic film, without any desire for sensationalism, sometimes a bit unusual in the transitions, but with strong and dramatic family scenes, extremely sharp dialogue and excellent performances from almost all the characters.

A gripping, realistic drama about a nineteen-year-old girl who ends up in a psychiatric ward. It's based on the play In Two Minds written by David Mercer for the BBC, also directed by Ken Loach.

Janice is diagnosed with schizophrenia, when she's just a rebellious teenager going through a rough patch. She's medicated and subjected to electric shocks. Towards the end, she does indeed appear disturbed, but that's a consequence of the treatment. This is an indictment of psychiatry in the 1960s. Her first psychiatrist tried talk therapy, but he was fired. This is inspired by R.D. Laing, a Scottish psychiatrist who was at odds with the psychiatric establishment at the time.

The doctors ignore Janice's social background. Her parents are blue-collar workers who have worked hard for years. Their values are conservative. They want the best for their children, but make poor decisions. There's a disconnect with the hippie generation. Janice's boyfriend, Tim, rebels against the petty-bourgeois society. He believes a family is a training camp where children learn to do the same as their parents.

The style is austere. We don't see two significant events: the abortion and the electric shocks. The emphasis is on the dialogue. There are, however, a few visual highlights: the blue-painted garden and the crying child on the pregnant belly.

Ken Loach often chooses relatively unknown actors who resemble their characters. Sandy Ratcliff had a troubled teenage life. She later appeared in Eastenders, but then she got into trouble with heroin. Here she's very believable, as are the two actors who play her patronizing but well-meaning parents.

An excellent film about a young woman who goes off the rails after having an abortion. Realistically and without any embellishment (typical of Ken Loach). Poignant and moving, with several powerful scenes (such as the family dinner at home). The conservative and narrow-minded parents are portrayed slightly better than the daughter.
