The film has its lesser moments, but there is also a lot that is right about this film. Effective photography by Sven Nykvist, Scott's good head and Alan Sharp's sharp dialogue.

By the way, it was bumblebee on the set:

Star George C. Scott fought with legendary director John Huston during the filming over script rewrites as well as the leading lady, Tina Aumont. After engaging in shouting matches with Scott, Huston quit the film. Fatefully, Aumont was replaced with Trish Van Devere, whom Scott fell in love with and married. Huston was replaced by Richard Fleischer, and the movie bombed both with critics and at the box office.

Not much of this is noticeable in the film, by the way...

4*

Very mediocre. Comes across as messy and the relationships between the three main characters do not feel like an added value for the film. The mobster Rickard is even mildly annoying with his constant "uncle".

The semi-romance took away pace and interest for me, making the film feel like a long sit. Some hefty car chases, but that certainly didn't make it a good film this time.

It is therefore not so much the strong camera work of Ingmar Bergman employee Sven Nykvist (master!) nor the actors, but really a weakly developed script. From the trivia I learn that John Huston has turned down the directing of this film for that reason... Fleischer can also blunder.
