A fun and entertaining film noir that flies by.

I thought it was quite a mixed film. Very good moments alternate with lesser ones. The first part is quite reasonable, but from the moment Anne Savage appears on the scene, Detour becomes a lot better and more fun. The infamous telephone murder scene, is really good. Of course there are some comments to be made about its logic, but I thought it was original.

Various plot twists ensure that it remains entertaining until the end. The actors don't do a bad job. They do make a few mistakes here and there, although that is sometimes also due to the dialogues, which are not always among the very best. I am particularly charmed by Anne Savage. A typical femme fatale, who manages to create a lot of threat with her look alone.

All in all, it is still a fun film today, quite raw, and also quite original. There are certainly some flaws here and there and not everything is equally good, but Detour also has a certain charm that makes it all look very nice.

3.5*

Good film in which a man follows his girlfriend by hitchhiking. A simple, but entertaining plot (where the short playing time does work to its advantage). Partly due to the fine voice-over, this film noir manages to create the right atmosphere. Tom Neal and Ann Savage are not only well cast together, but they both do a great job.

A pleasant film noir / thriller with a fairly short duration. It's not a classic per se, but everything is pretty good. Beautifully filmed, fascinating story and the 2 main characters carry the film on their shoulders. Even though the film doesn't seem that memorable, it sticks around longer than you might think. Not a grand film, but craftsmanship nonetheless.
