"DYNAMITE hits the screen with their kind of love!"
Nick Robey is a corrupt, yet sympathetic criminal. Nick lives a sad life with his alcoholic mother. His friend Al Molin persuades him to participate in a robbery, but it spirals out of control. A policeman is fatally injured and Nick can barely flee. He tries to avoid suspicion on him by entrenching himself at a local indoor swimming pool. Nick dives into the pool and he then meets the sweet-natured and respectable Peggy Dobbs. Nick gives Peggy swimming lessons and she introduces him to her parents, her younger brother Tommy and her friend Marge. The police track Nick down and he feels compelled to take the Dobbs family hostage.

I've mentioned John Garfield before. Garfield was an actor with primarily pre-war communist sympathies, a left-wing idealist who ultimately opted for independence in 1948, making films like Body and Soul and Force of Evil. Afterward, his sympathies were discovered, he ended up blacklisted, and his work began to dry up. Panicked, he testified, renounced communism, and claimed he didn't know any names. The only thing that succeeded was this film. It was launched by Garfield's friend, producer Bob Roberts, with Dalton Trumbo credited as screenwriter. Trumbo himself was in even more trouble. The same was later true for co-writer Hugo Butler and director John Berry. In many ways, this film is still an outpouring of troubled people. Garfield's fate was unfavorable. He died shortly after this film of a heart attack, which seems to have been partly caused by the tension. He was only 39. A great loss. Because he was excellent again.
Waxman's music (just like yesterday) is expressive and unusual. The sound design is sometimes similar. The film is carried by a wonderful, Jekyll & Hyde-esque lead performance by Garfield and very atmospheric photography. What other beautiful things could he have created if things had gone differently?

Garfield plays well here, although it tends towards overacting at times. I was annoyed by it, especially at the beginning of the film, but he seems tailor-made for the role. Otherwise it's just a solid psychological crime thriller.
