"One Cop. One Con. No Mercy."
Hard-hitting police officer Jack Cates is the sole survivor of a shooting. Cates is given 48 hours to find the killer and needs the help of the mobster Reggie Hammond, whom he gets out of prison for that short time. But Reggie is totally unmotivated to help and the criminal-helping-cop and the white/black situation creates the necessary clashes between the two. Despite all that, they turn out to be good partners.

Often referred to as the first buddy cop movie, which the director thought was funny considering these aren't 2 cops and most of the movie absolutely no buddies. But the film did give the genre a boost in the 1980s. Not only that, we see a lot of Reggie Hammond in Axel Foley. Some scenes would also fit in the Beverly Hills Cop movies.
Although the film was already made in the early 80s, it sometimes feels like a parody of the genre. The dialogues are not always that good, characters a bit cheesy and a typical 80's American police station with a screaming commissioner and macho hassle between the cops. The dialogues between Nick Nolte and Eddie Murphy are said to be mainly improvised, which you notice. It's much more natural. It's not a Lethal Weapon, but there's some charisma between both characters.
It's a light-hearted 80's action movie. You can see from the 90s and especially the 21st century that the action and violence have become more daring in order to reach a large audience, so to speak. But then not much is left. You shouldn't see 48 Hrs either because of the dialogues or the story. But because of the no nonsense fights, there are sometimes deaths when there are shots, a lot of curse words and with a bit of luck a touch of nudity here and there.
Compliments also to James Horner. The music is not Oscar material, but fits the film perfectly and provides the necessary atmosphere. I like these kind of scores.

Nice.
The Eddie Murphy of the '80s is actually quite a charismatic figure - both in his movies and in his shows. Although he has far from made real masterpieces, I do like to see his films from time to time. In 48 Hrs. he is paired up with the crass Nick Nolte - I'm not that mad at him. Director Walter Hill is best known to me for rather stiff action films, with meanwhile dated rude violence.
Also 48 Hrs. is not purely comical. There is cursing and fighting at a high pace. Maybe it's that balance that makes for a good movie in the end. In terms of look and soundtrack, the film feels, unsurprisingly, very eighties. So in that respect too it is somewhat dated, but you can also look at it differently and opt for the positive approach: 48 Hrs. is a product of its time and that of course also has its charm.
