It will indeed be remembered mainly thanks to the addition of Torch. Furthermore, the plot is funny, with Andre Toulon under his alias Eric Chaney (one of the many references). From the third part he would mainly play the good guy, but here he is a sublime villain. His appearance seems to me to be an ode to Claude Rains in The Invisible Man (1933). But with the revelation of what's underneath his bandages and sunglasses, we find something much worse. The ending is grand and here too the classic (30's) feeling dominates. A classic villain!

Despite this more than decent attempt, David Allen will mainly be known for his visual effects. He doesn't have the least titles behind his name, but more relevant is his contribution to, among others, the first Puppet Master film. Ultimately he was responsible for five Puppet Master parts, but that would undoubtedly have been more if he had not died much too early.

Better than the first part.

Many apparently think it is "more of the same", but I thought it was a slightly different film. While the first one seemed a bit more ambitious and serious, this has mainly become a simple horror film. The first one paid quite a bit of attention to the plot and really tried to build tension, part 2 seems to be more about the fun of the dolls.

And I thought that turned out to be a much better choice. The camp and corniness comes into its own much better, the film is a lot smoother and has some scenes that make more of an impression. The addition of Torch and Toulon as bad guys are particularly successful. And so a simpler film can work a lot better, sometimes it is just better not to try too much and fail, but to work to your qualities.

This is still not really great horror. Quite a few kills feel blocky and most of the figures still pose little threat, but because it is a bit more light-hearted, that is also less bad. Furthermore, it is an attractive location and some funny stop-motion work. Ultimately, this was quite entertaining, which I didn't immediately expect after the somewhat dull first part.

2.5*

Cheap horror movie with predictable negatives, but also with an extremely cute design. Director David Allen seems to embrace his film and works with a nice, authentic location. Of course, the puppets are without a doubt the highlight of the film, but as a viewer you will still have to wait a while before they are finally brought to the foreground. Unfortunately, there also has to be a story to stitch all the nonsense together and that is significantly less effective. The acting is quite substandard and the makers could have worked more with practical effects, not to mention the fairly idiotic finale. That doesn't change the fact that there is nevertheless plenty of fun to be had with the murders and general creativity. Torch is certainly a very nice idea and without a doubt steals the show, those are the little things that a film like this should rely on.
