Nouvelle-vague film, and I imagine that the general public, familiar with Dad's cinema with its traditional subjects and established social values, wasn't unanimously enthusiastic about the new genre, and certainly not about a film like "Le Beau Serge," which isn't exactly an example of easy accessibility.

It is a sober, sad film, partly moving on a psychological plane, and in which Chabrol, with his direct, angular style, with his surprising transitions between successive scenes, and yet with an intrigue whose main theme remains in question for a long time, does not exactly deliver a truly captivating film work.

The acting is good. Jean-Claude Brialy and Gérard Blain are a match for each other, and a young Bernadette Lafont is perfect for such a challenging role.

Claude Chabrol's debut film, and it doesn't show that at all. He's shot everything beautifully, with a great sense of balance (for example, a few close-ups, which he uses sparingly but which create a fine effect).

It's a village drama set in times long past. So it does require some empathy. The distinct characters are, of course, helpful in keeping things interesting.
