In the years following World War II, Hollywood finally took a serious interest in the racial antagonisms of the American South. This film takes a clear stand on that issue, summed up succinctly in Pinky's timeless question to her fiancé: “What's rational about prejudice?”

At the box office, this controversial film, which was banned in several states, was one of the most successful films of 1949, thanks to its gripping, straightforward story and the fine performances of Jeanne Crain, Ethel Waters and Ethel Barrymore. Although they resulted in three Oscar nominations, none of them were cashed in.

A somewhat forgotten gem by Elia Kazan with a deafening message.

Beautiful, sensitive and above all crystal clear.

Recently I saw Love field and compared to this much older film on the same subject, I fell

the differences are quite noticeable, especially the approach of different characters in this film were a lot less black and white, in this film there were also white women with a racist attitude, but also white men who were sincere and kind-hearted in personality.

That makes this film a lot more honest and sincere than coloring the characters in Love field in black and white.

One downside I found was the clear white actress (who played well by the way) who had to pass for a black woman, which came across as rather unbelievable. But all in all, a good film about the subject.
