One of the better Elvis movies with not always useful or entertaining side stories, but again very nice songs. Pelvis seems visibly relieved because the end of the film contract is almost in sight. However, he would make one more terrible dragon after this, the last one: Change Of Habit.

With a title like that and Elvis's head prominently on the poster, you would expect something different than what is presented here: a period piece about a funfair where a number of characters are portrayed and of which Elvis is one of the bunch. He certainly does not play badly and is also allowed to perform 2.5 songs. But apart from his contribution, I find this a boring case. It drags on and has an uninteresting story. In principle more serious than the previous Elvis pictures, but I miss a pulp content here that makes the previous ones more enjoyable (in my opinion). You feel that the atmosphere of the sunny sixties here at the end of a decade makes way for something else, the innocence disappears, and there is simply no more room for the naive fun of a few years earlier. The end of an era is approaching and this was also the penultimate film of Elvis Presley's still running film contract. The lack of success of his last films sealed this end. On the other hand, this movie gave me the idea that Elvis was definitely capable of playing a role in better movies. In an alternate universe that could have happened, but now we will unfortunately never know.
