Kitschy space opera. Clearly trying to capitalize on the Star Wars hype of the time, but doing so clumsily and without any class. You also see R2 and C3PO lookalikes. Even the story is truly a disaster. For example, the moon. The film was indeed a source of inspiration for the San Ku Kai series, which also featured a spaceship, and a lot of footage from the film was incorporated into the series.
I'm not done with Fukasaku's films yet. The man has explored just about every genre, but science fiction clearly wasn't his thing.
