In 1879, after winning the first battle, the British settlers offer the king an impossible ultimatum. It responds by sending its warriors on a warpath. The British are confident in their weapons technologies and the qualities and organization of their army, and they are invading Zululand in good spirits. The battle of Isandlwana is followed through the eyes of fighters from both sides, showing the arrogance of the British, who grossly underestimate their opponents...

Quite a nice film to while away the few hours before the snooker final.
Great acting, great fight scenes, delightfully stereotypical, what more could you want?

I'm getting started on Zulu Dawn on Sunday, which, if I understand correctly, is the prequel to Zulu from '64. The film certainly boasts a decent cast, so I was quite curious about it.
The story is clearly built up to the next major battle against the Zulus, where the English are confident in their abilities and weapons. The English characters are typical, with their habits, dourness, stiff upper lip, and humor. Bob Hoskins is also particularly good as the foul-mouthed, cutthroat non-commissioned officer. The long lead-up is understandable, as the journey is long. Speed is simply not an option with such a large army at such a time, with so many foot soldiers and the occasional skirmish.
The finale, with its grand battle where the characters are thoroughly overrun, is a delight, which can certainly be called impressive. Zulu Dawn is certainly not boring and has plenty to offer. However, the film can't quite measure up to the excellent Zulu from '64.
