Genoa, 1943. Grimaldi is a con man who poses as an Italian colonel to extort money from people whose relatives have been rounded up by the Nazis. When he is caught, he makes a deal with the Gestapo: he can live if he poses as General Della Rovere, a resistance fighter who was murdered by the Nazis.
