Not exactly a comedy to roar with laughter, but very entertaining nonetheless. Definitely not a movie I'll be re-watching often. Steve Martin plays his typical dry comedian character with some overacting at times.

Terribly materialistic film.

Steve Martin (rightly) freaks out, because his spoiled daughter thinks it's "normal" to get a wedding party gift of about $ 125,000.-. If the director had portrayed this in a slightly ironic way, like Gert-Jan Dröge in the past or MTV's Sweet Sixteen, I could have laughed about it. But unfortunately, the writers side with mother and daughter and Steve Martin remains the role of the sulk.

The tone of the film is far too serious to consider this as real comedy. Only the facial expression of Martin and a single slapstick scene provide the humor and that is of course very meager. Father of the Bride is mostly unadulterated American sentiment, which will crack your tooth enamel. The exaggerated (American) view of marriage is simply ridiculous. Throwing such a big and expensive party, only to get divorced a year and a half later. I have experienced it up close; It's a shame that this nonsense has also blown over to Europe.

Towards the end there are a few beautiful scenes and that deserves just 1.5*.

Good film about a father who is not prepared for his daughter to announce her marriage. This remake is in no way inferior to the original from 1950. Some adjustments here and there (mainly some adjustments to the time and some more comedic moments). But the fine tone and feeling remain. The excellent casting plays a big part in this.
