Since I can't wait for Gila! (2012) to come out, I decided to watch the original.

Clearly a low-budget 1950s SF film. The monster used a real lizard, which was sent through a toy landscape. Apparently, the lizard didn't survive the real thing either. I thought the story was decent, but nothing special. The cars (now classic cars) were fun.

I think the new film will be more exciting. Judging by the photos already available from the new film, the creators are staying close to the original. I think/hope a CGI monster would work better.

One of the countless ultra-cheap monster movies churned out in the 1950s. A film so bad it deserved a place in the Mystery Science Theater 3000 archives. I'd love to see that version again, because the hilarious prologue already makes it clear that this is a first-class botch job. The title role goes to an amphibian in a terrarium with lots of sand and small twigs that pass for trees; the "impenetrable forest" consists of a few shrubs, and the miniatures are as lifelike as Play-Doh. The first hour is filled with endless ramblings about the causes of the disappearance of a few villagers and the destruction of their cars, interspersed with poorly edited "attacks" by the Giant Gila Monster. But the sting is in the tail, when Don Sullivan picks up the banjo at a party and sings a gospel song. The only redeeming feature is that it heralds the end of the film. Sad...

I do enjoy B-movies, generally speaking. Amateur cult movies, lovingly botched work, MST3K-worthy dragons. But I prefer something that's also somewhat entertaining (see, for example, Time of the Apes (1987)), and The Giant Gila Monster is truly deadly, deadly dull. The biggest problem is that the film is 95% filled with endless banter between teenagers, and occasionally with excessive banter between others. It's not captivating, and it becomes especially pathetic when the lead actor also thinks he has to show off his musical talent.

And I haven't even started on the monster. The "giant monster" is clearly just a Gila monster (a lizard, that is) of normal size, who doesn't actually do anything threatening at all. Like most lizards, he's quite zen, and the most active thing he does is occasionally take a few steps. Although it's implied that he's doing a lot of damage by doing so, through very fake miniatures. Unfortunately, this isn't one that's so bad that it's fun again; this is one that's so bad that you're bored to death. Even with MST3K, this was an ordeal.
