Hoeksteen van de Samenleving plot

On paper, equality between men and women seems to have been achieved: women are studying extensively, are often more highly educated than men, and are more financially independent than ever. Yet, the division of work, care, and income often changes as soon as children arrive. Only nine percent of heterosexual couples manage to divide family tasks equally. In this documentary, director Juul Op den Kamp investigates how old ideas about family, work, and care are still deeply rooted in Dutch society.

A well-structured but visually uninventive documentary in which Op Den Kamp questions why the Netherlands lags behind in terms of women's participation in the labor market. The focus is not only on the history of women's emancipation but also on deeply rooted cultural beliefs. The greatest strength of this fascinating documentary is that Op Den Kamp also takes a critical look at male emancipation. And that leads to surprising conclusions.
