Batik, Beats & Bumbu plot

This documentary follows young Dutch artists whose (fore)fathers grew up in the Dutch East Indies. They actively seek collaborations with their colleagues in Indonesia. This cultural exchange creates a modern interpretation of the cultural heritage of Indonesia and the Netherlands. This third generation cherishes Indonesian influences and deepens Indonesian traditions and customs, giving them their own interpretation.

Claire Pijman followed several Indo-Dutch people traveling to their grandparents' homeland to learn more about their cultural identity. The Amsterdam band Nusantara Beat tours Indonesia with traditional Indonesian songs in a modern guise, DJ Sekan delves into Indonesian (pop) music, and culinary artist Vanja van der Leeden learns to cook the traditional Indonesian way. Due to a lack of a storyline, this feels very disjointed. It doesn't help that Pijman jumps seemingly randomly from one quest to the next.
