Mariinka plot

Long before the Russian invasion in 2022, war was already raging in the Ukrainian frontline town of Mariinka. In the midst of the war, a promising boxer becomes a military paramedic, a girl smuggles unexpected goods across the front lines to survive, and two brothers now fight on opposite sides of the front lines—against each other—while their youngest brother lives safely away from the war with an adoptive family in the United States. Pieter-Jan De Pue spent ten years documenting the slow disappearance of a town, but also the fierce, tragic perseverance of those who once called it home.

As the youngest of four brothers, Ukrainian Daniil was adopted by American parents as a toddler. His older brothers joined the military. Maksim becomes paralyzed in his legs, Mark fights in the Ukrainian army, and Ruslan on the Russian side in the feared Wagner Group. Natasha joined the Ukrainian army as a relief worker, and Angela is left alone in the devastated Mariinka after the death of her family, where bullets (and other projectiles) literally fly around her ears. Daniil (literally renamed Samuel) learns to shoot for hunting, and Natasha returns to the place where her prom took place. Filmed at great personal risk and full of ironic moments, the use of staged scenes makes you frequently forget that this is a documentary. That limits the emotional impact of this well-intentioned but not entirely successful passion project.
