Fantastique plot

"Fantastique" is a magical-realist coming-of-age story set in Guinea-Conakry. We follow 14-year-old Fanta, who juggles caring for her ailing mother, school, and what she loves most: training with the Amoukanama acrobatic circus, hoping to join their next big tour. In her attempts to live up to all the expectations, Fanta begins to question her true desires and embarks on a quest to find her own voice.

What a joy this is! Beautiful cinematography and a fantastic soundtrack. I had a smile on my face for the entire (far too short) running time.

In Conakry, the capital of Guinea, teenager Fanta dreams of a career as a contortionist at the Amoukama acrobatics circus. Prins follows her during her internship, where Fanta is under immense pressure. Not only to prove that she is good enough, but also because her success is vital to being able to afford care for her sick mother. A mix of documentary and drama (with visibly re-enacted scenes) full of breathtaking acrobatics (which will leave many viewers grinding their teeth) paints an authentic-feeling picture of Guinean culture and the iron discipline required to perform at this level.
