The Incomer plot
On the Orkney Islands, Isla and her brother Sandy lead a normal life. They fill their days hunting seabirds, talking to mythical creatures, and protecting their habitat from intruders. One day, the lonely and socially awkward Daniel arrives on shore. His goal is to evacuate the duo to the mainland, but that proves more difficult than anticipated.

First of all, the film is a comedy with perhaps some corny caricatures and humor, but you smile nonetheless because it feels endearing in an almost childlike way. And the fact that it feels endearing is perhaps because the film deals with the clash of cultures – something we, as (postmodern) viewers, can certainly relate to – but depicted in a sympathetic, fairytale-like manner in the form of two primitive islanders who believe they are descended from seagulls and that admitting people from the mainland will be their downfall (which, culturally speaking, is of course true), while the modern world has no use for such cultural sensitivities. The municipal official who loves fantasy stories forms the bridge between the bureaucracy of the modern world and the mythological world of the islanders, and he succeeds in overcoming the islanders' fear of that modern world, while the film itself completes the island's mythology: even seagulls must eventually leave the nest, while—very postmodern—they can feel at home anywhere as long as they are together, with their own stories and those of others allowing them to keep 'flying'. The film may not be a masterpiece, but it is very likeable and a sort of Hundreds of Beavers (2022), albeit slightly more conventional.

Isla [Gayle Rankin] and Sandy [Grand O'Rourke] grew up on a remote Scottish island and are used to making short work of Incomers. The timid Daniel [Domhnall Gleeson] is given the unenviable task of telling this brother and sister that they must leave their home so that the island can become a bird sanctuary. Naturally, things do not go according to plan. Isla and Sandy's bizarre behavior and hints of an incestuous relationship attest to the bad taste of this unfunny comedy, which relies on the age-old stereotype of the eccentric islander.
