2000 Meters to Andriivka plot

A narrow strip of wooded land between two minefields in eastern Ukraine is the only road to Andriivka, the Russian-occupied village. In 2023, a Ukrainian platoon headed to the village in an attempt to liberate it. Journalist and filmmaker Mstislav Chernov followed the soldiers closely. The road to Andriivka is only two kilometers, but it took the soldiers three months to reach it. Video footage from helmet cameras and drones reveals why.

A microcosm of the failed Ukrainian offensive against the Russians in 2023, in which a group of soldiers is ordered to recapture two kilometers of wooded territory and capture Andriivka, a strategically important village. Chernov was there, follows the soldiers during the battles against a largely invisible enemy (and drones), and conducts interviews during the long periods when the soldiers are waiting for help or orders. The brief commentary from the only recognizable Russian soldier on screen is telling. Filmed mostly with helmet-mounted cameras, it is chaotic and confusing (just like in real life), but as an authentic portrayal of life at the front (reminiscent of No Man's Land during World War I), it is unparalleled.
