Le Chant des Forêts plot
From a young age, director Munier spent his time in the Vosges forests. From his father, he learned everything about nature: how to see, and especially how to listen. Vincent's son is now the same age as he was then. We follow the three generations of Munier family in the vast forests. Waiting and watching, the silence interrupted only by their whispers. There are rutting deer, funny young owls. In the evenings, by candlelight, they tell each other stories. The last time Grandpa saw a capercaillie, for example, or a tall tale about a lynx.

With the help of his father Vincent and grandfather Michel, both nature photographers, teenager Simon Muner spends his days and (especially) nights in the Vosges Mountains. Michel wants Simon to always be amazed by what he sees in nature. The images and sounds he records during these expeditions also evoke wonder and admiration for the flora and fauna in what remains of areas where nature still has relatively free rein. The lingering gazes of often rare animals are thought-provoking in this beautifully filmed, meditative nature documentary. The only drawback is the repetitive aerial shots of misty forests accompanied by Warren Ellis's atmospheric music.
