A solid but rather in-depth documentary about the versatile Eddie Murphy, whose career spans nearly 50 years. A bit more self-criticism wouldn't have hurt, as his many flops aren't really touched upon, but thankfully there's still plenty to enjoy. The 1980s are particularly well-represented, and that was undoubtedly his best period. Murphy himself is a pleasant narrator, and the documentary contains many entertaining sketches and film clips.

At best, it's enjoyable as a "greatest hits" compilation, showcasing the highlights of Murphy's career. Unfortunately, there's little depth or room for self-reflection. The flops that followed from the '90s onwards were merely a learning experience. But the viewer is no fool: Norbit is fine as a technical masterpiece (good makeup, a man plays many roles), but it's otherwise a monstrous product. Murphy doesn't comment on this further, ignoring the clashes with director Landis and the paparazzi issues, and unfortunately cutting short a moment about artistic empathy.
The documentary aims to portray another great man, but, as Murphy himself pointed out, he's no longer that person from the '80s. He doesn't recognize himself when he watches the recordings of his stand-up shows. This would have been an interesting starting point. Because everything he releases now is, at best, an echo of the past. The energy isn't right anymore (see Dolemite); a different format is needed.
Yet the documentary does want to pretend that spark of greatness is still there, and the featured cast members treat him as such. But isn't that a bit fake? That scene with the hand puppets is supposed to be funny, but it doesn't quite reach that level.
Murphy reinvented himself several times but now seems to prefer to laze around, saying he has little interest in new projects. Reinventing yourself becomes more difficult then.
Unfortunately, comedy is always somewhat less timeless than drama, and perhaps that also applies to the actors who shape the genres. Fortunately, there's nothing wrong with enjoying a little bit of the past.

It covers Murphy's ambition from a young age, his early steps as a comedian, his explosive rise as a (Black) movie star who kicked white America's ass on the big screen, his bitterness toward SNL, and a few unfortunate choices (Vampire In Brooklyn, Norbit). It's a good cross-section of Murphy's career, and the lack of actors he worked with is notable.
