Watched it at Kinepolis Brussels in IMAX format. It was a wonderful experience to see the man live on the big screen again and experience the live vibe. It's billed as a concert film, but it's actually a series of various rehearsal scenes and live cuts strung together by Elvis himself—an audio tape they discovered of him, along with other footage. The film also provides insight into Elvis's inspiration and musical motivations.

Two documentaries/concert films were released during his lifetime: Elvis on Tour (a Grammy Award winner, by the way) and That's The Way It Is. If you've already seen those, EPiC is no surprise, as the footage and new footage were retrieved from the vaults of those films. However, as mentioned, this EPiC is a welcome addition for the reasons mentioned above. The picture and sound in IMAX were fantastic. These kinds of films also scream for a big screen. Go see it

The title is somewhat misleading: the film isn't a concert recording, but an endless series of (short) clips from TV appearances, interviews, rehearsals, and especially shows he gave in Las Vegas in 1969 and 1970. It shows Elvis as a born entertainer. From a young age, he loved all music, and when he sings, he can't stand still because the music takes over him, which explains his charisma but also the early accusation that his movements were devilish. When he was drafted into the military and started making films, things went south, but he revived when he started performing again, performing as many as three times a day with complete dedication. And because of that dedication and interaction with both the musicians and the audience, such a performance becomes one big ecstatic experience, with the audience—and myself as a viewer—at his feet: Elvis receives the passion he gives back from the audience. His passionate show is reminiscent of James Brown, but Elvis has a more cheerful tone: his humor constantly puts himself in perspective, and the pure joy of playing and singing, like an Aretha Franklin gospel performance in church. I've often found it odd that The King wrote so few classic songs, but his genius lies in the fact that it doesn't matter what he sings: he turns every song into a celebration. Moreover, Elvis is a charming and good-natured man both on and off stage—his humor lacks the irony of The Beatles—and it's a crying shame that this master singer and entertainer, but also a good, fun guy, met such a tragic end.

Luhrmann blends footage from old concert films with unused archive material to paint a picture of Elvis Presley as a self-proclaimed "entertainer" who performed approximately 1,100 times in Las Vegas from 1969 until his death in 1977. A visibly tired Elvis compensates for his shortcomings as a singer with extravagant costumes, wild movements, and self-deprecating humor. On stage, he plays Elvis, and the enormous band and multi-member choir make it seem better than it actually was. Well-edited and beautifully restored, Elvis himself would probably have been happier if he could have focused on (serious) film roles.
