Whitetail plot

Jen works as a conservationist in the same forest where her younger sister died years ago in a tragic accident. The unexpected return of Oscar, a childhood sweetheart from the distant past, stirs up long-buried memories and forces her to confront their shared history. As a poacher leaves violent marks on the area she protects, the line between past and present blurs, and Jen must confront what has haunted her all this time.

Unfortunately, another compromise film from Leopold. Just like Cobain, Whitetail shows glimpses of what she is capable of at times, but the whole is nowhere near as good as her best films (The Brownian Movement, Boven is het stil). At her best, Leopold is more radical. This doesn't have as much plot as Cobain, but it isn't as stripped down as her best films. Leopold is at her best when she really pushes the boundaries. When her films are observational. When sparse dialogue isn't the story, but those observations are. Whitetail is driven more by dialogue, and that doesn't work as well. I love some of Leopold's stylistic elements too much to really give it a failing grade, but unfortunately, I found Whitetail less than I had hoped.
