A decent film about a professional gambler with just a few days to pay off a debt. The story and characters are rather shallow, and I've seen them all before. It does look stylish, though, and Colin Farrell does a fine job. Macau also makes a welcome change from Las Vegas. A small 3.0 stars.

I don't know whether to call this film genius or madness. It's a visually very strong and atmospheric story about a gambling addict on the verge of a breakdown. The film manages to present it all so abstractly that you're drawn into the thoughts of a gambling addiction (although I have absolutely no idea what that feels like). I do think Colín Farrell's acting is strong, though. And the atmosphere creates elevates this film to something unique, so genius or madness...

It won't have the same effect for everyone, but I personally thought it was successful in that design.

3.5*

Kees Van Kooten still looks good in his old age! Oh no, it's not it. Visually impressive but rather thin on content, this superficially developed drama about a down-on-his-luck gambler (Colin Farrell) who unexpectedly gets the chance of a lifetime in Macau. Tonally, the film bounces back and forth between comedy and tragedy, with occasional forays into stylized magical realism (Tilda Swinton looks like she stepped straight out of a Wes Anderson film). That sounds rather messy, and it is. Not boring and at times enchantingly beautiful in terms of camerawork and lighting, but ultimately not very memorable.

After Berger's two gems, Conclave and Im westen nichts neues, I had high hopes for this one, but what a huge disappointment. I gave his previous two a 4.5; I thought they were brilliant.

There may be some beautiful message behind it, but this Vegas of Asia and an addicted gambler couldn't captivate me at all.

I have to say, I am definitely not a gambler, but I have been to Vegas a few times and have always found that I have put a little more than planned into the slot machines.

Not that Farrell was bad, but I certainly wouldn't give him an Oscar for it, I thought he was much stronger in the brilliant film "The Banshees of Inisherin".

This film won't win any awards, and rightly so....
