An excellent film about two musicians who meet and start a Neil Diamond tribute band. A true musical love story set in the '90s, you don't need to be a Neil Diamond fan to appreciate it. Two wonderful leads, played with plenty of charm and enthusiasm by Hugh Jackman and especially Kate Hudson. A fine film that also manages to move.

Mike [Hugh Jackman] can no longer pay the rent with his gigs as a musical impersonator. The turning point in his life comes in the form of colleague Claire [Kate Hudson], who encourages him to focus on a Neil Diamond tribute. Aided by colleagues from the music scene (including a hilarious Jim Belushi), they quickly make a name for themselves as "Lightning & Thunder." Until a tragedy threatens to destroy their lives. Given the sheer number of musical performances, your appreciation depends largely on your appreciation for Neil Diamond, but Jackman and Hudson (rarely better) throw themselves wholeheartedly into their roles in this superficial but entertaining biopic. Ella Anderson is impressive as Claire's daughter.

A film with a superficial and mediocre script and somewhat overly solid direction, which sometimes makes the film drag (you can feel those 130 minutes), but it's saved by the acting. Hudson is fine, but she's given a little too little to do, while Jackman impresses with a natural, sympathetic, and (therefore) especially moving performance—his best performance to date, in my opinion. Hudson and Jackman also demonstrate real chemistry, which makes their collaboration a joy to watch.

Nevertheless, the script is sometimes a bit overwrought, with occasional strange directing and plot choices that don't quite fit. The moment Claire gets hit by a car is already a bit odd, but the hospital scene afterward is especially strange. Whether this was real or a dream(I think the latter) is still unclear to me. Also, the many arguments and problems are often quickly smoothed over, so there's never any real drama, if it weren't for Hudson and Jackman's efforts to make something of it. 3.0*.
