A simple film that works reasonably well in the cinema but is also quickly forgotten. Bautista isn't exactly suited for such a leading role; I'd rather see him in a supporting role or as a comedic sidekick. The action is adequate but not very spectacular, and the villain is far too much of a caricature, making him more laughable than scary or intriguing. It's nice how the setting is sometimes highlighted, such as the constant presence of the Northern Lights (there was something about a solar storm once, and I have no idea how long it lasts or can come so far south, but oh well). The whole concept of such a dilapidated world is captivating, but the film focuses more on action than on social or drama, as a film like Children of Men did (and is therefore much better). 2.5 stars.

A mediocre film about a successful treasure hunter tasked with finding the Mona Lisa. A kind of heist film in a post-apocalyptic world. The story and characters are poorly developed and fail to captivate. It's not original in any way, and the action scenes are also rather standard. It's not really bad, but that's about it.

A cheaply realized post-apocalyptic world, with some sources quoting a budget of 60 million. An almost unbelievable figure considering the final result, which offers a rather lackluster and utterly mediocre depiction of such a world. Dave Baustista and Olga Kurylenko perform well together, and the action is abundant and bloody, but Afterburn suffers primarily from a lack of logic and innovation. The justification for the content is utterly absurd, and the ending is far too familiar for such an undertaking. An excessively long running time is the final reason for a low, failing grade.
