Beautifully shot, with a wonderfully nostalgic, warm, summery atmosphere. Drenched in a layer of melancholy and teenage angst. With the Danube as a constant, almost mythical backdrop. In my opinion, a very special (queer) coming-of-age film, with an interesting supernatural/mythological angle. The family members aren't necessarily the most compelling or profound characters—nor is the main character, for that matter—but the images, the atmosphere, and the subtext more than make up for that. Some scenes do drag on a bit too long—the intimate moment on the boat, for example, or the crying brother at the end—which didn't always feel earned. At other times, I was completely immersed in the atmosphere.

(I saw it at Film Fest Ghent three months ago. But I have to say: the film really still resonates.)

3.5*
