Dracula

I have my doubts about whether the right man was cast for this, but that aside, it's a rather unusual Dracula film. It borrows heavily from a previous film from 1992, combined with the 2006 film "Perfume." Despite that, it's quite beautifully made and holds your attention throughout. I'm just not so impressed with some rather questionable, strange choices made.

Director Luc Besson reunites with Caleb Landry Jones for another film in which he plays an endearing lead role, but unfortunately, this age-old story works considerably less effectively than, say, Dogman. Dracula: A Love Tale feels all too familiar, meaning its 129-minute running time offers considerably fewer surprises. Visually, you might naturally expect a polished performance from Besson, but unfortunately, he makes a rather clumsy and unfocused impression. While the locations are beautiful, the focused camerawork, effective editing, and any real energy are completely lacking. This ensures that Dracula isn't a boring film, but rather one you'll quickly forget afterward. Plus points for the excellent performances by the cast.

In 1889, a vampire [Caleb Landry Jones] fulfills the dying wish of his next victim, Jonathan Harker [Ewend Abid], by sharing his life story. In an asylum, a priest [Christoph Waltz] examines a woman [Zoë Bleu] who, according to him, is also a vampire, supposedly 130 years old. Besson reworks Bram Stoker's pulp novel for the 21st century with a visual style reminiscent of Francis Ford Coppola's 1992 film, but loses itself in romantic clichés. Depending on your preferences, the ball scene, inspired by Michael Jackson's "Thriller," is either the high point or the low point. Superficial and anything but memorable.
