Everything you could possibly hate about romance movies is here. A romance between an American student [Sofia Carson] and her Oxford literature professor [Corye MyIchreest], the stereotypical eccentric girlfriend [Esmé Kingdom], a nerd [Nikhil Parmar] and a bitchy gay man [Harry Trevaldwyn], a critical parent, and a dark secret that threatens to ruin the romance. We're forced to endure these horrors solely for the sake of the leads' handsome faces. How outdated and terrible can a romantic drama get? Look no further!

I watched this movie with my youngest daughter. We weren't sure what to expect, but it was completely different. Google and Netflix say it's a rom-com, but it's definitely not. A romantic film with a dramatic ending is more accurate. The movie reminded me of "Me Before You" (2016), but I liked it a bit better than "My Oxford Year." We're not fans of American actresses here either, because they look so similar in expression. But the Oxford setting made up for a lot. The ending was beautiful, with shots of European tourist spots.

Very inconsistent. The film owes much to the beautiful, atmospheric filming locations in Oxford, and the premise—an ambitious student fulfilling her dream of studying there and finding love—is romantic and engaging. It's a shame that the execution sometimes leaves much to be desired. The film starts off extremely weakly with that ridiculous scene in the snack bar. Such childish scenes recur occasionally (for example, that jealousy-inducing stuff at the Halloween party) and really drag the film down.

The chemistry between Sofia Carson and Corey Mylchreest is fine: it's not exactly sparks, but it's certainly not bad. The supporting characters are chosen as walking, sometimes annoying, stereotypes, which is a shame, because it means they rarely create any enjoyable moments. The "Me Before You"-esque twist isn't bad, but it is handled somewhat perfunctorily. The film is at its best when it chooses a calmer setting: the more intimate moments between the two leads against a beautiful college town backdrop. I didn't think it was bad, but I think it could have definitely done more.

2.5*
