I'm a lot more positive about the film than most. Initially, the film feels (indeed) like a lot of stock effects – from jump scares to hallucinations about the dead – to generate maximum horror without a coherent story, so that it's intense but you have no idea what's happening. But that's (of course) the point: gradually the film explains what's going on – with a nicerelationship reversal because initially the woman is a bitch and you feel sorry for the man in love – and it does this so well that you can already guess the ending (it is noted twice that the woman looks exactly like the creatures' mother, so it remains incomprehensible why the man brought her to the house) but by then the film is almost over and the film still manages to surprise in its execution. The "creatures" that appear at the end look very fake, but by then the woman is already laughing because she, too, can guess the ending, so you can laugh along with her.All in all, the film manages to captivate throughout with its mystery and suspense, and the film's design is also beautiful. I think Perkins, while not a flawless horror film, has nevertheless delivered a good and original one.

A slow, yet highly atmospheric horror film from director Oz Perkins. It's been a while since he touched the level of February, and his stylistics have been somewhat more well-known for a while now, but Keeper is still solid. The tension is subtly built, the mystery remains well-maintained, and Tatiana Maslany's acting is decent. Perkins thus succeeds in creating several unsettling moments that make good use of the setting, even if the revelation has a rather bizarre outcome. There could have been a stronger focus on suspense, and the buildup is a bit too long, but Keeper exudes quality and justifies Perkins' popularity.

Goalkeeper

The story follows a couple spending their anniversary weekend at a remote cabin in the woods. When Malcolm unexpectedly has to return to town, Liz is left alone and confronted by a malevolent presence.

The plot sounds more exciting on paper than it actually is. In reality, Keeper proves to be a dull and, above all, confusing affair. The film tries to be creepy, and succeeds sporadically, but ultimately it becomes a slow burn where little happens.

Fortunately, there are some bright spots. Visually, it's good, and the atmosphere is effectively established. Tatiana Maslany also delivers a fine performance. However, that's where it ends for me. For a horror film, Keeper lacks a good script, suspense, and pacing. Perkins clearly chooses style over substance, which makes this "horror film" less than successful for me.
