Fuori plot
In Rome in the 1980s, Goliarda Sapienza had been writing her masterpiece for years. However, the work was rejected by the publishers. The desperate writer then committed a crime that cost her both her good name and her status. She ended up in jail, where she made friends with several younger women. Their bond proved to last even after their release, and Goliarda rediscovered her zest for life and the need to express herself creatively.

The emotionally unstable 54-year-old writer Golarda Sapienza [Valeria Golino] tries to get her life back on track after serving a prison sentence for jewel theft. But her most valuable relationships are with her fellow inmates, particularly with junkie Roberta [Matilda De Angelis], who relapses into her old patterns after her release. The portrayal of the complex relationships that can develop between (female) prisoners is excellently acted, especially by Golino. However, there is hardly any personal development or story, and the surprising denouement therefore feels like an unsatisfying anticlimax.
