The Message plot

"For the first time... the vast, spectacular drama that changed the world!"

Epic film adaptation of the origin of Islam. It is the 7th century and in Mecca the powerful leaders are in conflict with Mohammed who is fighting the many abuses such as slavery, drunkenness and atrocities. Mohammed claims to have had a vision of the Archangel Gabriel and calls on the people to worship only one God. After the revelation of God, Muhammad decides to take up arms against the rulers of Mecca. The inexperienced Muslims are victorious but in the battle of Uhud they are defeated. They agree to a ten-year truce so they can continue to spread the word of God.

I didn't think The Message was a success at all. The film has a bit of the atmosphere of the great epics of the 60s and 70s, in the category Lawrence of Arabia, Ben-Hur and The Ten Commandments. But unfortunately it has also taken over the running time of those kinds of films, and that is way, way too much of a good thing. It's a bit of a flat film anyway. Pretty nicely filmed, well acted too, but it's a well-behaved, very propagandistic vehicle. In the beginning it is still interesting to learn more about the circumstances in the seventh-century Arabia in which Mohammed lived, yes, but there are hardly any tension or interesting developments. Of course he fights against the local rulers who have nothing to do with that weird question that stirs up the population. But in the end we only see a very long drawn-out triumph of Mohammed and his followers/apostles (or what do you call that in Islam?) through the Middle East in which city after city and family after family are convinced of the holiness of Mohammed, which puts a lot of emphasis on how good and woman-friendly and anti-racist he was - and that is deadly boring in the long run. Even with three coffee breaks there was no getting through.

And what certainly doesn't help in this film adaptation is the fact that, for religious reasons, Mohammed is not allowed to be depicted. It therefore feels very strange to continuously see the turning to not get him into the picture, and in the end it just doesn't work and Mohammed feels like the great absentee. Rarely does it feel like he's really involved in the whole thing, other than people talking about him secondhand all the time. And then the actors and the beautiful images may still yield a point, but in the end, despite the epic images and with a few battles here and there, I have rarely been so bored in a film. 1.0*

What "The Ten Commandments" (and others) are about to Christianity, this "The Message" is to the origin of the commandments of Islam.

No Cecil B. DeMille, although no mass scenes and adventurous spectacle are avoided here either.

interesting actually and quite successful in setting and acting.

Excellent film about the prophet Mohammed and the origin of Islam. A grand epic with a fine decoration and a few nice battles. Maurice Jarre's music is also spot on. Also interesting as a history lesson and the fact that Mohammed himself is not in the picture (for religious reasons) rather works in favor of the film.
