The film is a charming coming-of-age drama that depicts the world of an innocent girl in a not-so-innocent world where she also has to deal with loss and grief. At the same time, I think the film alludes to modern, individualistic (Westernized) Japan, where marriages fail and we are all essentially lonely, a manifestation of which is the girl's obsession with telepathy—connecting with each other over a distance.

Eleven-year-old Fuki [Yui Suzuki] must cope with the impending death of her father [Hikari Ishida], but her mother [Lily Franky] is too busy working to help her. Fuki seeks connections with people of different ages, and in 1987, that was very different than today. A series of loosely connected scenes with Fuki as the unifying factor, but also because of her stiff, mannered performance, there is as little evidence of any personal development as there is of coherence. Poetic to some, meaningless to most.

A long sit, especially that. It does have some atmosphere at times, but this is truly a film of many individual moments that sometimes work, but not always, and certainly not for a total of 120 minutes. The acting also remains somewhat superficial, and the film therefore remains very detached despite the sometimes heavy drama. 2.0*.
