Burnt-out action hero Johnny Cage [Karl Urban] is chosen to defend Earth Realm with four other fighters in a fighting tournament against champion Shao Kahn [Martyn Ford]. According to the “rules,” Kahn will permanently seize power if Cage and his teammates lose. Mortal Kombat was conceived as an alternative to war, but cheating and an inability to accept defeat are sacred in this utterly illogical nonsense. The idiotic script is merely an excuse for circus acts involving tug-of-war and thinly veiled insults directed at Jean-Claude Van Damme (notably the lead actor in the first Mortal Kombat film adaptation). As an actor and martial artist, Urban couldn't even lick JCVD's shoes in this tiresome CGI fest, and the 'jokes' are corny and/or infantile.

Simply excellent entertainment. And especially if, like me, you have played almost all the games.

Nice cameo by MK creator Ed Boon as the bartender. A few nice references to the original Cage, like the dick punch. Boon wrote this Mortal Kombat and I hope he does the same for part three. Urban as Johnny Cage, a very good choice!

Part three bring it!

You can't make a Mortal Kombat movie much better than this one. After all, director Simon McQuoid had Ed Boon by his side this time. So what more could you want? Or what less could you want? Well, for example, get rid of Cole Young! And yes, fortunately Johnny Cage kicks him out of the spotlight. (No, not literally, unfortunately.)

Speaking of Johnny Cage. Sorry Karl, you are a perfect Billy Butcher, but Johnny Cage is just asking a bit too much of you. Yes, you try your very best, but it’s actually just not quite there. And then your New Zealand accent pops up every now and then as well. But still 100 times better than a Cole Young character.

The film focuses entirely on the tournament, so the fights and fatalities follow one another at a very rapid pace. Perhaps even too rapid. A number of fights are too short, causing it to lose some of its impact. However, this is not a major drawback, of course.

A bigger downside is Baraka with his failed rubber face. No idea why they thought this design was a good idea. And then Quan Chi. Did they run out of steam? Was time running out? Was the makeup department taking the day off? Again, no idea. Finally, Sindel. Totally forgettable. But fortunately, it’s not so bad that it ruins the movie.

If you enjoyed MK (2021) even a little bit, you can consider the first one a nice, modest party, and the second a grandly successful event!

4*
