Shinkansen Daibakuha plot
A tense phone call comes into the Shinkansen General Operation Control Center. The caller claims that a bomb has been planted on the Hayabusa No. 60 en route to Tokyo and that the bomb will explode if the Shinkansen train’s speed drops below 100 km/h. The caller demands a ransom of 100 billion yen to defuse the bomb. A last-minute battle unfolds as the crew, passengers and railway workers try to prevent the explosion in the limited time available. Will the Hayabusa No. 60 be able to overcome this crisis?

Exciting, very entertaining sequel to the unknown to me The Bullet Train from 1975. I will definitely track that one down now. Actually the film that Speed 2 should have been: a bomb has been placed in a Japanese high-speed train that will go off when the train goes below 100 kilometers per hour. A lot of drama takes place on board the train, just like in the control center. The acting is here and there almost hysterical, but the whole thing stays on track. The film is smoothly filmed and edited and never bores for a moment. The script is also surprisingly well put together and cleverly builds up the tension towards the spectacular finale.

Nice action thriller. The story of the film is simple and known from a number of similar predecessors. The elaboration is reasonably successful. The film is a bit on the long side but does not bore. The pace is good and action and tension alternate well. It does become more and more unbelievable during the film but that does not bother. Visually it could do with nice special effects. 3.0/3.5
