Wheelie plot

21-year-old Reza has no idea what he wants to do with his life, except skateboarding, smoking joints, kissing girls and hanging out with his friends. When his best friend is selected for a medical degree in Maastricht, he starts to feel uneasy about the fact that he has no plans for the future. Lacking ambition, he books a trip to Thailand where he hopes to find all the answers to his questions, not knowing that his life will never be the same after a serious motorcycle accident. Reza has to reshape his life knowing that he is permanently confined to a wheelchair, but ironically enough, he now knows how to make better choices than when the world was at his feet.

A telefilm about a huge tragedy in a young life. Yet a film that is anything but a tearjerker.

Beautiful story structure, powerful imagery. Beautiful how the before and after is designed. The fast, colorful, carefree in which you already detect an undertone of: it can't stay like this forever.

Then - literally - the images that stop at the turning point, the silence afterwards, the incomprehension and disbelief, followed by the often destructive attempts to hold on to 'the way it was'.

The search of those involved on how to deal with this. And finally the discharge, the tidal wave of realization and frustrations.

The expression of what was already subliminal at the beginning of the film. Things become clear and can be let go so that the path opens up again. Even without a wheelchair, the path to adulthood is already a struggle, let alone WITH.

21-year-old skater Reza [Samuel Beau Reurekas] decides to travel the world in the hope that he can then map out his future. In Thailand, he suffers a spinal cord injury in a single-sided accident that is the result of his own recklessness and ends up in a wheelchair. Reza's mother [Malou Gorter] and sisters Jane [Laura Bakker] and Tara [Clara van Kempen] look for a way to support him, especially mentally, and Reza's old friends are a great support. Fellow sufferer Lydia [Olga Zuiderhoek] also tries to encourage him. Well-directed coming-of-age drama takes the skate culture (also thanks to the excellent work of editor Joshua Menco) and the family troubles equally seriously. What is missing is a satisfying denouement. The title refers to a skill that increases the independence of wheelchair users.

The film had to get going a bit but after a while it became a nice film. The problems surrounding a 20 year old who ends up in a chair are well presented and the family structure gives a wonderful image
