Psychotherapist Linda [Rose Byrne] struggles with mental health issues herself and teeters on the edge while trying to care for her school-age daughter [Danielle Macdonald]. She disturbs her therapist [Conan O'Brien] at work, and the phone calls with her husband [Christian Slater], who is away for extended periods, drive her even further to despair. Byrne's provocative portrait of a woman on the brink of mental collapse is an impressive tour de force. Bronstein also films her primarily in close-up to highlight how deeply Linda is trapped in her own world. Difficult to watch, but impressive. Macdonald must convey her emotions with her voice and delivers a top-notch performance (as well).

Objectively, a good film that makes excellent use of the audiovisual medium. As a viewer, you follow a woman facing a tense time, but with the sometimes harsh lighting, loud sounds, and close-up camera (fortunately in a wide format, so it doesn't become oppressive), you also get the feeling. Byrne has to do a lot with her face and eyes and skillfully holds the viewer's attention without becoming a caricature, which the film certainly has the potential for, especially with its comedy.

The content isn't particularly captivating. As viewers, we're given little context and have to rely on the experience. That works perfectly well for fifteen minutes, but after that, there's really no development on that front, and the film even becomes a bit dull. There is one good laugh, though, with that hamster being run over. 3.0*

Wow, that really got under your skin. It wasn't fun, but it was good (I think). You're very close to the main character. Her frustrations, her inability, her denial—you experience it all intensely. There's never a moment of peace. Constant screaming and whining, it drives you crazy. And then there's that child, who, of course, can't help it either, but who nevertheless drives you crazy, precisely because you love her. It's a smart choice not to show it; it makes it all just a little bit more annoying.

The man remains largely out of sight, making you almost forget that his absence and his unsympathetic phone calls are a major cause of everything that goes wrong.

I wouldn't call this a comedy, by the way. I laughed exactly once (when that hamster got run over), otherwise, I thought it was complete horror.
