An entertaining but ultimately somewhat predictably developed horror film. The mediocre cast unfortunately doesn't fully bring the script to life, and the characters are rather annoying. Fortunately, there are some positives, such as the pleasantly eccentric finale, but the film falls a bit short of good intentions.

The film opens intensely, as a naked couple fleeing through the woods is attacked by strangers who are skilled at using bows and arrows. Several explicit scenes led me to believe I'd stumbled upon a hard-boiled exploitation film. That proved not to be the case.

After a turbulent start, the film calms down and we accompany the young couple Sage and Diego on their way to a luxury villa in the woods for a vacation. Upon arrival, it turns out there's a double booking when another couple shows up and turns out to have rented the house. Because the landlord is unavailable, they decide to make a virtue of necessity and share the house. A cautious friendship develops that quickly feels a bit awkward. Unlike Sage and Diego, who are modest, the other couple behaves rather freely. They exhibit extroverted behavior, are scantily clad, and bring an erotic atmosphere to the villa. However, the way they do this is not natural but annoyingly intrusive. The couple seems to be playing a manipulative game that quickly loses its lighthearted tone. Well, that's promising.

Bone Lake's staging is slick and polished. The camerawork, colors, and lighting are exaggeratedly playful. The style contrasts sharply with the violent content of the opening scene. Of course, experienced thriller and horror viewers won't fall for the smokescreen. The stylistic departure from the opening scene is far too obvious for that. The twist does indeed arrive, but it's not fleshed out in a particularly grim, violent, bloody, or suspenseful way. All the excesses are played out within a smooth and pleasant framework that treads far too safely. This is rather disappointing, and the framework also ensures that the film is hardly exciting.

A Twisted Tale of Love...

Super cute characters, in a really dorky way, and they made me smile. Curiosity killed the cat, and I can hardly wait until the shoe drops, and then the foot the wore the shoe.

What a twisted film this is becoming, or maybe always, was from the start. It was such a viciously well played game with our ability to discern what we thought was going on and what finally needed to happen.
