El Maestro Que Prometió el Mar plot

Ariadna discovers that her grandfather is searching for the remains of her father, who disappeared during the civil war. Determined to help him, she travels to Burgos, where a mass grave is being excavated and where he may be buried. During her stay there, she learns the story of Antoni Benaiges, a young teacher from Tarragona who was her grandfather's teacher before the war. Through an innovative pedagogical method, Antoni inspired his students and made them a promise: to take them to the sea.

Ariadna [Laia Costa] wants to fulfill the last wish of her grandfather Carlos [Gael Aparicio] by searching for the mass grave containing the body of his father [Carlos Troya], a victim of the brutal Franco regime. She meets Emilio [Ramón Agirre] who tells her that as a child [Nicolás Calvo] in the 1930s, he and Carlos [Gael Aparicio] were taught by the inspiring teacher Antonio Benaiges [Enric Auquer]. A compelling portrait of the period in which Spain changed from a secular republic to a fascist dictatorship, with a charismatic Auquer perfect as the teacher who makes his children dream and think about places they have never seen – including the sea.

Beautiful, inspiring but also confronting and brutal.

Despite the many feel-good elements in this film, you know the fate of the teacher and the great-grandfather in advance and you gradually get clear hints about the coming disaster.

After the many beautifully filmed and probably highly romanticized introductions between the students, their parents and the heart-warming teacher, you would almost forget this. The contrast and shock effect is no less when the moment comes.

This makes it a bit difficult for me, half limping between "feelgood" and documentary about the Franco terror. Due to the elaboration, in my opinion, it did not work out completely well.

I also would have liked a little more background information about the struggling granddaughter and her mother for better empathy.
