Frankie Freako plot

"Fasten your freakbelts for a wild night."

Conor is incredibly average. He doesn’t swear, finds holding hands with his beautiful wife Kristina exciting enough, and goes to bed well in advance. When his sneaky boss, Mr. Buechler, and Kristina call him names for his straightforwardness, Conor is deeply offended. Determined to prove them wrong, he is lured by an advertisement promising him the party of a lifetime with a creature named Frankie Freako. When Conor calls, chaos ensues as Frankie, accompanied by two other similar friends, wreaks havoc in his home. Who are these little monsters and why have they decided to torment him endlessly?

I once saw Psycho Goreman (Film, 2020) and I actually quite liked it. I can actually appreciate Steven Kostanski's style.

Frankie Freako is a fun crazy movie that is a mix of action, crime and comedy. With a real 80's vibe around it. Nice practical effects and the acting has its charm in this setting. In terms of style it also tries to stand out visually and that works quite well. The atmosphere is good.

The plot feels a little messy at times and as a result the film seems a bit draggy towards the end.

Still, it has some nice and funny moments. Nice for an evening of entertainment.

An entertaining and passionate piece by director Steven Kostanski, who has clearly found his niche within this kind of tribute to the '80s. Frankie Freako isn't as daring, funny, or impressive as some of his previous projects, but Conor Sweeney's acting is convincing, and the practical effects are adorable. Towards the finale, the scale increases, which proves desperately needed, as the first half of the film amounts to little more than a series of jokes and gags delivered by rather unexpressionist puppets. Frankie Freako ultimately suffers from an identity crisis, as its target audience remains unclear. It remains to be seen whether Kostanski will return with real ambition, as despite the quality on display, this still felt too much like a friends' project.
