King Ivory is a kind of mosaic film. We see multiple storylines surrounding Fentanyl, and at the end, they converge. The film is somewhat reminiscent of Soderbergh's Traffic (a film I didn't like a long time ago), and just like that film, this one also features a storyline in which one of the characters' children becomes addicted; and just like then, that is the weakest part of the film. The attempts to portray a rebellious boy are excruciatingly superficial, and the most dramatic part rarely goes beyond a cautionary true story film. The other parts are much less focused on drama and much more of a genre film, with heavily armed officers chasing criminals in a totally rotten world. While they also realize somewhere deep down that what they are doing will be, at best, a drop in the ocean. It lacks much depth, but the build-up of tension and the dark atmosphere are quite good. An unbalanced film, then.

Fentanyl is cheaper and harder to trace than heroin, and has consequently taken over the American drug market. But the competition is (literally and figuratively) cutthroat than ever. Swab portrays the modern drug trade and the futile war against it, from Holt Lightfeather [Graham Greene], who directs the drug trade in Oklahoma from his cell, to teenager Lago [David Barcena], who is recruited to sell the finished product on the street. Dale plays the officer who risks his life to fight the drug trade but cuts ties with a teenage son [Jasper Jones] who is in danger of falling prey to fentanyl. It has all been done before, but thanks to the broad scope, raw realism, and strong acting, this is certainly worth watching.
